Shorewood began its history as Troy. In 1830, Horace Haff, founder of the town, named it so for his hometown of Troy, New York. The town began with a knitting factory, grist mill, sawmill and sheep farms. In 1926, Albert Bruning bought farmland from the Meyers and subdivided it. With Shorewood real estate parcels being sold for the construction of cottages and beach houses, Troy became a summer resort for Chicagoans. In 1957, the town was incorporated as Shorewood, because there was already another Troy, IL. In 1957, Shorewood's population was 350. In 2010, it was over 15,000. Shorewood welcomes those building or buying Shorewood homes.
