Reuben and Betsey Flagg settled on what would become Plainfield properties just before it was settled as Walker's Grove. When James Walker built his home and the first sawmill in what would become Will County, Reuben Flagg carried his lumber into Chicago, in addition to foodstuffs, for the settlers' homes in Chicago. In 1834, Charles Ingersoll laid out the town of "Planefield", just northeast of Walker's Grove. By the 1840s, industry and business filled the southern and central portions of the town. Churches and Plainfield homes filled the town. Plainfield College was founded here, but was later moved to Naperville as North Central College.
